Reaction kinetics of sodium ascorbate and dental bleaching gel.

The aim of this study was to establish the reaction kinetics of 35% hydrogen peroxide and sodium ascorbate and to determine the mass of antioxidant required to neutralize the bleaching gel. The results indicated a direct correlation between the mass of hydrogen peroxide and that of the antioxidant agent. In addition, 5 minutes of contact ... Read more

Protective effect of lecithinized SOD on reactive oxygen species-induced xerostomia.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are believed to be involved in radiation-induced xerostomia, and the application of antioxidants may be a promising method for treating patients suffering from salivary gland dysfunction. We believe that our results may advance the potential application of antioxidants for the prevention of ROS-induced xerostomia.

Tea catechins reduce inflammatory reactions via mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways in toll-like receptor 2 ligand-stimulated dental pulp cells

In this study, we evaluated whether catechins could inhibit the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators induced by dental caries-related bacteria, Streptococci, or pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) stimulation in human dental pulp fibroblasts (HDPF). We further determined the mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory activity of catechins.

Protective effect of proanthocyanidins on endotoxin induced experimental periodontitis in rats.

The pathogenesis of periodontitis involves anaerobic oral bacteria as well as the host response to infection and several drugs have been developed which can curtail these deleterious effects. Proanthocyanidin, a novel flavanoid extracted from grape seeds, has been shown to provide a significant therapeutic effect on endotoxin (Escherichia coli) induced experimental periodontitis in rats.

Mouthwash solutions with antioxidant properties

Mouthwash solutions are mainly used for their antiseptic properties. They currently include synthetic agents (chlorhexidine, triclosan, etc.) or essential oils (especially Listerine). Many natural extracts may also be used. These associate both antiseptic effects and direct action on host response, due to their antioxidant, immunoregulatory, analgesic, buffering, or healing properties. The development of new technologies, ... Read more

Why Green Tea Strengthens Your Teeth

It's thought that naturally occurring substances in green tea have bacteriocidal effects helping to kill mouth bacteria and ward off tooth decay and gum disease.

Current Study: Antioxidants and Periodontitis

Chronic inflammation of the oral cavity destroys the soft and hard tissues of the periodontium (ie. periodontitis) and causes tooth loss. These pathological changes can result from dysregulated production of reactive oxygen species. Specific aims for this proposal will examine targeted antioxidant therapies using mouse models of oral disease as a potential strategy for adjunctive ... Read more
