Invasive Dental Treatment and Risk for Vascular Events

When performing dental treatments for patients with vascular disease, providers may wish to warn patients that vascular events increase in the first 4 weeks after invasive dental treatment. Treatment of periodontal disease may reduce cardiovascular risk in the longer term, but studies have suggested a link among dental procedures, acute inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. However, ... Read more

Fatty Acid Profiles in Smokers with Chronic Periodontitis

Smoking is associated with specific structural alterations to the lipid-A-derived 3-OH fatty acid profile in saliva that are consistent with an oral microflora of reduced inflammatory potential. These findings provide much-needed mechanistic insight into the established clinical conundrum of increased infection with periodontal pathogens but reduced clinical inflammation in smokers.

Oxidative Stress, Systemic Inflammation, and Severe Periodontitis

Periodontal infections have been associated with a state of chronic inflammation. To ascertain whether severe periodontitis and its treatment are associated with oxidative stress, we recruited 145 cases (periodontitis) and 56 controls in a case-control study. A further pilot intervention study of 14 cases (periodontal therapy) was performed. Blood samples were taken at baseline (case-control) ... Read more

Wiki: Antioxidants

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, ... Read more

Wiki: Free Radicals

Radicals (often referred to as free radicals) are atoms, molecules, or ions with unpaired electrons on an open shell configuration. Free radicals may have positive, negative or zero charge. Even though they have unpaired electrons, by convention, metals and their ions or complexes with unpaired electrons are not radicals. [1] With some exceptions, the unpaired ... Read more

The Role of Polyphenolic Antioxidants in Health, Disease, and Aging

Polyphenolic antioxidants from dietary sources may help lower the incidence of certain cancers, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and DNA damage and even may have antiaging properties. This review critically examines polyphenolic antioxidants, such as flavonoids, curcumene, and resveratrol in health, disease, and aging with the hope that a better understanding of the many mechanisms involved ...
